Last week, John Monash Science School students discovered the range of skills used in the meteorology and climate sectors with a visit to the Bureau of Meteorology training centre.

The Industry Immersion saw students participate in a range of activities led by Bureau of Meteorology professionals. Each session developed the students' understanding of a different area, such as meteorology, climate, and observation systems. Students used technology to capture weather data, investigated the structure of our atmosphere, and constructed their own long-range weather forecasts.

Students got hands-on experience with various weather data capturing technologies, reading rain gauges, and looking into wind speed. During the session, the Bureau of Meteorology released an Ozone Sonde Balloon, allowing students to watch the process and develop their understanding of how the ozone is measured daily.

A lively industry panel saw students ask questions of Bureau of Meteorology professionals from around the world. Students discovered the career journeys of the staff who led their activities across the day and weather technicians dialling in from Antarctica, Willis Island, and Giles weather stations.

Thanks so much to the Bureau of Meteorology for their work in delivering yet another valuable Industry Immersion day.
