Exploring Sustainable Housing with Beyond. Tiny Village

Recently, John Monash Science School students explored what factors create a sustainable, liveable home during one of their many visits to Monash Tech School as part of their Tiny Village elective.



In Tiny Village Design, students investigate various factors that affect the design of a sustainable home, and gain a deeper understanding of sustainable practices, energy management, and practical applications of scientific and engineering principles.



During the session, students used technology to measure the environmental conditions of a greenhouse and analyse its suitability for farming. Through hands-on experience gathering data using Boson Sensors and micro:bits, students gained insight into real-world technology applications in areas such as hydroponics, vertical farming, and agricultural automation.



Students also worked together to prototype their own smart home devices using our custom-built Protopanels with AI vision systems. Using a design thinking approach, students tinkered with electronic devices, sensors, and mechanical systems to create their own innovative automations to improve their home’s liveability.


Additionally, students participated in a design thinking sprint using Little Bits, and 2D to 3D undertook modelling using Cricut machines.
