On Friday, students from Wellington Secondary College, Highvale Secondary College, and Brentwood Secondary College visited the city to participate in an intellectual property workshop led by Swinburne Law School.

The lecture-style format saw students begin to understand the concepts of intellectual property law and patents, discovering what a patent claim looks like and its impact.

In small groups, students then built their own prototype device using LittleBits and drafted a patent claim to protect their invention from intellectual property theft.

An industry panel saw students ask insightful questions of professionals currently working or studying in the fields of law and intellectual property. Professionals from IP Australia, Swinburne Law, Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick and Ashurst Australia shared their study and career journeys with the students.

Thank you to our industry partners and the Department of Education for their work in delivering such a valuable event for students.
