Monash Net Zero

Net Zero is a new addition to the suite of Industry Immersion offerings in 2022. Brentwood SC is spearheading schools with their commitment to sustainability, so the student-led Green Team was a great choice to pilot this important opportunity.

Partnering with Monash University’s Net Zero Initiative, the event included a walk around campus, visiting a number of flagship Net Zero projects, including Electric Vehicle Charging station, Future Control Room, Bike Arrival Station and Rooftop Solar Panels.

Following the walking tour of campus projects, students headed back to Monash University’s Net Zero Headquarters, where they enjoyed a lively Q&A session with a range of Net Zero team members. Students were able to pick the brains of leading sustainability, Net Zero and Climate Action experts, employed by Monash University to achieve Net Zero by 2030. A broad range of topics and issues were discussed, ranging from the highly technical to study pathways, potential work experience options and next step career planning.

Following lunch, students returned to Monash Tech School, where MTS facilitators led the students in a Design Thinking sprint using Sparktank Technology. Sparktank is a new platform which MTS has accessed to assist us to facilitate rapid-fire design sprints. The technology supported a design sprint that was able to record multiple issues, filter data and capture responses. Students used iPads to brainstorm, ideate in a fast-paced environment, filter, vote, and scaffold valuable ideas on the issues causing the most concern back home at Brentwood Secondary College.

The data was presented to Brentwood SC for follow-up at school, and Sparktank licences and training for staff was made available, ensuring the Green Team could continue the good work back at school.
